  • Ladies Who Tech

Ladies Who Tech Convention Returns for Second Year to Shine Spotlight on Women Who Build and Create

性别不平等在STEM(科学、技术、工程和数学)行业仍然是个压迫性的问题。

Ladies Who Tech的联合创始人Charlene Liu说。

She Creates.”,Ladies Who Tech的组织者们策划了一整天的活动,包含主题演讲、专题研讨会、培训会,展示女性创业项目的科技互动体验区,炉边谈话,圆桌讨论,和鸡尾酒会,活动将在新天地的安达仕酒店举办。

Ladies Who Tech的联合创始人Jill Tang说。

Though women have seen great strides toward achieving gender equality over the last several years, the gender gap remains a global problem. According to the 2018 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report, it will take 108 years to close the gender gap worldwide. China in particular fell in its gender parity ranking from 63rd out of 115 countries in 2006 to 103rd out of 149 countries in 2018. Gender inequality in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) industries continues to be a pressing issue, with rapidly developing new tech sectors like artificial intelligence (AI) reporting a gender gap as high as 72 percent.

Ladies Who Tech is a community platform founded by women who work in STEM industries and believe in challenging the status quo by inspiring more women to discover their potential within STEM. With chapters in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Beijing and launches in Chengdu, Shenzhen and Taipei planned for 2019, the goal is to raise awareness about the lack of women in STEM, ultimately helping corporations to foster greater diversity and encouraging more girls to pursue higher education in STEM.

Throughout the past two years of operation, Ladies Who Tech has held monthly events for women (and men) who engage in various spheres within STEM industries, including e-commerce, AI, blockchain and big data. Ladies Who Tech's "In Action" forums have brought companies and communities together to engage in dialogue and foster new relationships, while their "Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Leadership Power Breakfast" series connects D&I leaders with policy makers to encourage gender diversity within corporations. Ladies Who Tech also recently launched their "Founders" series to specifically match female tech co-founders to startups and highlight women-led technology startups.

Partnerships for these events include corporations such as ANZ, Bayer, eBay, General Motors, Google, IKEA, PayPal, PwC, and The Walt Disney Company, while guest speakers are women from diverse backgrounds who range from entrepreneurs to professionals to corporate leaders in STEM industries. By sharing their personal journeys in STEM, their motivations, and their insights on STEM topics, these pioneering women have inspired many female students and young professionals at Ladies Who Tech events.

In June 2018, Ladies Who Tech held their inaugural Ladies Who Tech Convention at Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai and PwC Innovation Centre. With prominent keynote speakers, breakout sessions, workshops, startup pitch sessions and a recruitment fair attended by over 1000 people, the all-day convention was a catalyst for aspiring women and men in STEM to not only learn from seasoned professionals, but also to network, discover new opportunities, and build awareness about the importance of gender diversity in STEM industries.

After its successful 2018 debut, the Ladies Who Tech Convention returns to Shanghai for another full day of advocating for women in STEM on Saturday, May 11, 2019 – the day before Mother's Day.

“We are holding the convention on Mother's Day weekend this year in order to encourage mothers (and fathers) to support their daughters in STEM studies and professions, and vice versa,”said Charlene Liu, Co-Founder.

With the theme of “She Builds. She Creates.", Ladies Who Tech organizers have planned a full day of keynote speeches, workshops, training sessions, interactive tech booths showcasing women-led startups, fireside chats, panel discussions, and cocktail session at Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai. In a very special Mother's Day panel, attendees will hear inspiring stories from Moms Who Tech and Moms of Daughters Who Tech, while another panel will discuss the ramifications of the 2018 Global Gender Gap Report.

Topics for 2019's keynote speeches include some of the tech industry's most cutting-edge developments, like AI, big data, robotics, autonomous vehicles, loT, sustainable tech and blockchain, as well as a continued focus on how to advance gender diversity. The convention will explore these ideas through both formal keynote addresses from female leaders in STEM as well as more casual fireside chats aimed at fostering discussion within the community. Some of this year's prestigious keynote speakers include Shawni Chen, Managing Partner of PwC SDC, and Dr. Jing Dong, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

“Role models are extremely important for improving gender equality and diversity in the tech industry,”said Jill Tang, Co-Founder.“This year, we want to showcase more tangible products and services built by women to get people used to seeing women in the tech scene, and to let them experience firsthand how gender diversity contributes to both social and economic advancement.”

To that end, the Convention's tech corner, in which companies in AI, blockchain, robotics and more present their most cutting-edge products and interact with attendees, returns this year. Participants will gain firsthand experience and exposure to leading global technology and learn directly from accomplished experts in the field. The Convention welcomes both women and men to join forces and work together to raise awareness of women in STEM.

To make this year's Ladies Who Tech Convention far-reaching and impactful, organizers are looking for sponsors, speakers, tech startup partners, and community partners, especially from corporations and STEM communities throughout China. At press time, sponsors include Bayer, eBay, and IKEA. Interested parties can email ladieswhotech@outlook.com for more information.
